There is no such thing as a "legit source" of US Gold Coins in China and yes you should not only stick with NGC and PCGS certified coins but stick with a knowledgable dealer to help you guide your way thru rare coin investments.

Believe me, they are out there. I have two rare Type III Double Eagles I bought over the internet from a supposedly legit source in China. One a 1882 that only has an estimated 28-32 coins known remaining. The other a 1986 with a known circulation of 45 - 50 coins. Both were returned from Numismatic Guaranty Corp as "Not Genuine". Efforts to contact seller were for naught. Caveat Emptor ... anything that looks too good to be true probably is.

You also have to remember that the specific gravity of tungsten is 19.3, the same as gold so a tungsten coin surrounded by a layer of pure gold is sufficient to thwart any surface measurement technique.

That leaves the fire assay which is destructive.

I stick to NGC or PCGS encapsulated coins.
