Hi Sarah Jacquet.

My name is Jonay Beltrán. I'm from Spain and I've been wondering for a long time now how it would be to live in Australia. Could you please send me your e-mail somehow so I can get in contact with you? I'm really interested in talking to you about this little project I have because you've fascinated me with this article.

Australia has always been called the lucky country, imo, it still is. I am fortunate that I live here with my wife and children.

Good article- I would add another possibility- Gold Coast living.

Spent 'summer' in England- grey, wet & miserable thru June, July & August; why they tolerate that climate is
quite beyond me. Aussie weather is so good, love the bright blue, fluffy white clouds, intense colours, a
privilege to live here.

Recruited from Perth to work in Brisbane, I bought a small old (and cheap!) apartment 10k south of GC central, away from the madding tourist crowd. Now renovated it is pleasant, 100m from beach and ideal as a base to commute to work in Brisbane; I work 4.5 days (4 nights in hotel) then a long weekend in the GC apartment. A mini holiday every week! The train costs about 12 dollars and takes 1hr 20min so daily commute is possible; Brisbane is largely walkable, not too big but hilly! Southbank is fabulous, great place to live.

I guess one might do similar on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane but I have no experience there. Rail also serves that area but longer travel times.

Working atmosphere is more relaxed than Perth although Perth has a better transport system IMO (better than many bigger cities, I have to say).

It is good here, & it should be made easier for good, hard-working & friendly people to come here, from skilled migrants right through to refugees. We are part of a global village these days & can't ignore global issues & problems. It's nice to hear from someone who has changed country & likes it.

Love the article! While I wasn't personally a fan of Brisbane itself (I consider myself a Sydney-sider though I've only been here three years) the Australian lifestyle and personality is EVERYWHERE in Australia, and that's one of the reasons I made the move from the US to Sydney. Though from what I saw of Brisbane it would be an excellent place to raise a family.

The problem is, that with so many people wanting to move to Brisbane (both from interstate and overseas), the price of housing is going through the roof, resulting in an extreme housing shortage. Traffic infrastructure is stretched to breaking point and the current program for works is constantly being outpaced by population growth. 55% of migrations to Brisbane are from overseas.
So while it might seem like a wonderful idea to pack up and move because you crave sunshine or whatever it is that is so attractive, just remember when you are sitting in bumper-to-bumper peak hour traffic, that you yourself have contributed to the problem directly. As a Brisbane born and bred local who, on a greater than average salary, cannot afford to purchase a home because real estate has increased so much in price, I say gee, thanks....and go home.

Welcome to Australia. There used to be a phenomenon called the 'whinging pom' - an Englishman who complained constantly that "the food isn't as good as back home" / "the weather is too hot/cold (huh?)", etc. It was guaranteed to create hostility and unpleasantness.

Hopefully the country has less things to complain about nowadays. It sounds to me that with the positive attitude of the writer, Australians have been keen to help and welcome her and her husband as friends. I've traveled a lot and lived overseas - my experience is that people will welcome you anywhere if you remain upbeat and engaged.

Remember, 'To have friends, first be a friend'. Once again, welcome (from too hot/cold Melbourne) :P
