Timing:
Timing is one of the most important factors in any business and it is very important in the MLM and Network Marketing Industry. If a networking company gets legs, as they say, it has about a three-year run before it hits a window of critical mass where most people you talk to have at least heard about it. The greatest challenge with timing is that most companies have the funding to make it to the front edge of critical mass, but when growth dynamics outpace their cash reserve then it either hits a wall or management starts to tinker with the pay plan to find more money to fund their growth. We like to see that the company has sufficient cash reserves and that there is a commitment to investing in infrastructure earlier on in the game. Getting in on the front end of a fast growing company does have risks, but not as much as getting in on the back end of a company that has run its course. In a nutshell, timing is everything in any venture, but it’s especially true in the MLM and the Network Marketing Industry. Early birds prosper.
Product:
Here is the biggest beef we have with network marketing in general; you can usually find the product cheaper without having to pay the markup for commissions. Some companies justify higher prices by saying we put the wealth back in your pocket, but that is not acceptable to us. If we find a company that has a unique product and it is priced a little higher that can be ok, but it is no different than what you can find at the super market for 30% less then that does not pass our test. Is the product patented; does it have higher grade ingredients; is the product exclusive? These are things to be considered as well. The product is one of the tougher analysis points because of the perceived value that others place on it, so, we look for a good product that is reasonably priced and is also unique. One final issue in our analysis is the consumable issue; you make more money when you have continuity or consumable product. Re-orders are a big plus in our evaluation of the product.
Leadership:
This is kind of a no-brainer. We are looking for leaders with a successful track record and leaders who are transparent. If they are not willing to put their name on the website this is an instant disqualification in our evaluation process. You know what they say where there is smoke, there is fire. Another aspect to leadership is the talent that they attract. To lure a top network marketer away from another company takes a really good plan. Top networkers like Riccardo Ferrari know that their reputation is on the line and if they lead a group of people into a bad company it reflects badly on them. Sometimes the hardest thing to restore is your reputation, and the easiest thing to lose is your reputation. Great leadership does not always guarantee success, but it is a big plus to have war-tested generals at the helm.
The strength within an organization is a reflection of its leadership because they’re willing to spawn and mentor new leaders in their ranks. Both Riccardo Ferrari and Chris Kent have been down that road and back again.
Compensation Plan:
This by far is the hardest and easiest to review. There is no one best compensation plan because everyone has different motivations with their comp plan, but with that said, we try to steer clear of the companies that have “tricky” compensation plans that require lots of hoops to jump through. If they have too many bonuses, we see this as a way of taking money away from the masses and putting it in the pockets of the few. We lean towards pay plans that are simple and that provide a way for people to make good money in the first 90 days. Truth be told, most do not last more than 90 days, and if they do, you can pay most of them with recognition rather than money. We would rather find a company with a lot of thousand-aires rather than a company with a few millionaires. Another truth about “inspirational” marketing is the fact that some people just like hanging out with positive people, and the network marketing and MLM industry have the market on this crowd. In this industry, a few make a boatload of money, a minority make a decent living and the majority break even or spend more than they make.
Now, to address another question, “Why would Escapeartist enroll in the company we have reviewed?” Well, number one is because we believe in the company and frankly because if our reader is going to put skin in the game, so are we. With that said, we will only do it in a situation where there is full disclosure.
