Grow Your Own – Do It Yourself Kit
IT’S A SLAM DUNK. You’ll never be hungry again. EVER!
You talked. We listened.
Do you want to own your own food machine that grows healthy organic vegetables and home-grown fish for your own use or for commercial sales? That my friend is an Expat’s Dream! We’ve redefined the term, “FOOD TO GO.” Imagine living anywhere in the world and growing fresh vegetables and fish right outside your kitchen in a Portable Farm™ that’s sized to feed your family. Or, how about owning a full-sized commercial farm that requires only ¼ acre (about 1,000 m²) of land that requires only one person to operate?
Portable Farms™ Aquaponics System, The Food Machine
Thanks to Escapeartist’s global coverage as a Strategic Media Partner, Portable Farms, Inc. has received a mountain of inquires from people all over the world who are concerned about their own personal food security and here’s what people have told us:
- They are concerned about the possible disruption of food distribution due to oil prices, acts of nature, or political unrest
- They worry about eating GMO or non-organic food because of what it may contain
- They know that very few fish (farm raised or ocean fish) are inspected prior to sale to check for contaminants
- Droughts and flooding are effecting farmers ability to produce the amount of food to support the global population
- A news story reported last week said, “Wholesale prices rose more than expected last month (March 2010) as food prices surged by the most in 26 years.”
- Store-bought food doesn’t have the flavor or nutrients that it used to have.

Food security (access and availability to fresh food) is an important issue facing all families, organizations and communities in the world today. Portable Farms™ Aquaponics Systems offer an ideal solution to address the issue of food security by providing a constant 12-month supply of fresh, healthy and nutritious vegetables and home-grown fish (protein source).
- By having your own Portable Farm™, you can grow enormous amounts of organic vegetables and home-grown fish in a very small space and the systems require 90 – 95% less water than in-ground growing and very little labor.
- For example, a 20’x30’ farm produces 3,600 vegetables and 1,400 pounds of fish a year which will comfortably feed 5 adults their vegetables every day, and fish several times a week, forever.
- A commercial sized farm (10,000 sq feet = ¼ acre = 4047 m²) grows 70,000 vegetables and 21,000 pounds of fish per year. This commercial-sized farm requires one semi-skilled person working 40-hours per week to operate. That COULD BE YOU!
- You can save on labor costs and do all the planting and harvesting at waist-level, so there’s no stooping or bending for those of us who are ‘not so young’ anymore. Plus, no weeding, no watering, no fertilizers or insecticides necessary.
We have responded to Escapeartist reader’s requests by offering a 21st Century solution to the issue of food security. Now, for the first time, we are offering the Portable Farms™ Aquaponics Systems KIT for those who want to control their food source, in perpetuity, anywhere in the world. A Portable Farm™ REALLY IS PORTABLE. Now you can build a Portable Farm™ wherever you are living, and if you move, you can take it with you. {Who said you couldn’t take it with you? Well, they were wrong. Now you can.} When you move, you can put the technology and components for the farm in a box, and when you land in your new paradise, you can rebuild your farm. SLAM DUNK. You’ll never be hungry again. Ever.
There are three options available for owning a Portable Farms™ Aquaponics System: 1) We build it for you. 2) You build it, and we finish it. 3) OR, YOU CAN NOW DO IT YOURSELF (DIY).
- No need to water your plants because a Portable Farms™ Aquaponics System uses a timed cycle to circulate the water through the system so the plants receive a fresh supply of warm, nutrient-laden water.
- No soil is necessary. Your plants grow in trays filled with gravel or river rock.
- No weeding is necessary, just regular harvesting and replanting.
- No pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers are necessary.
- No antibiotics or hormones are necessary.
- The Portable Farms™ Aquaponics System can be Solar or Wind Powered.
Definition of a Portable Farms™ Aquaponics System: A PFAS is a closed loop, water-based, fish and organic vegetable production facility. It utilizes insulated and heated fish tanks to grow Tilapia, and then runs the warm water from the fish tank (laden with nutrient-rich fish waste) through a settling-tank clarifying system (removing the solid waste). The water then flows through gravel-filled trays to feed and water growing plants. The entire system is built in modules; each module contains one fish tank, one settling tank, and up to 200 sq. feet of growing space and these modules are enclosed in a climatically adapted growing structure, usually a greenhouse. The structure keeps out pests and helps maintain temperature.
For the ‘Do It Yourselfer,’ you’ll still need to buy the building materials, but most of the supplies are available at local home centers and hardware stores. Plus, we provide you with the complete list of materials to ensure you have all the necessary components and parts to build your own Portable Farm™.
If you’re ready to become a Portable Farmer, now you can DO IT YOURSELF. The basic DIY Kit includes the license, Assembly Manual©, Operations Manual©, Portable Farms™ Siphon and CAD pump. A more complete kit includes the items in the basic kit plus the Settling Tank, air pumps, air stones, timers, and other required components.
All DIY Portable Farms™ sizes are available in the US and Canada. PLEASE NOTE: Smaller units are now available for sales outside the US and Canada.

Hmm…no mention of what the smallest possible setup is. Maybe you can’t run this from the balcony of an apartment. And, is it best to have a southern exposure (most light) or partial shade. Too many questions.
