Just kidding. Sort of.
I lived and worked in Chicago for 33 years, and I had been thinking about retiring and playing golf and enjoying some fishing, but in order to retire in the Chicago area, and keep my ‘standard of living,’ I would need twice as much money as I had in savings. As the Bard reminds us in Hamlet, “Therein lies the rub.”
Marge, my wife of 28 years, and I enjoy warm weather so we began looking for place to move that offered affordable retirement living, and a place where we didn’t need heated mattress pads in the winter or snow shovels. We both enjoy golf and the enticement of playing on a green course, year round, was very seductive for us. We went online and Google searched for affordable retirement locations that offered golf and fishing and we discovered Grand Bahama Island, only 55 miles off the coast of Florida. They have an average winter temperature of 70° which means the grass is always green and you can play golf in the Bahamas 365 days a year without wearing a down coat or insulated golf shoes.
We booked a winter vacation to Grand Bahama Island in mid-February to avoid Chicago’s coldest and nastiest month of the year. Our goal was to play golf (of course), do some fishing, explore the island and speak to some realtors about our retirement plans and see if we could find something in our price range so I wouldn’t have to die at Christmas. :>
On the day we left for the Bahamas from Chicago’s O’Hare airport, there was a raging blizzard and we sat on the taxiway in our Hawaiian shirts and Bermuda shorts while our airplane’s wings were being de-iced. It was not pretty. We couldn’t wait to take off for our EscapeArtist dream vacation. Although our takeoff was delayed, we didn’t care. We were in a holiday frame of mind and when we arrived in Freeport, we walked off the plane to warm tropical breezes.
Upon arrival at the Freeport airport, our new realtor picked us up and took us directly to our hotel to check in, and we made plans to meet the following day to look at real estate properties. On the drive to the hotel, she told us about a client of hers who had just moved to the Bahamas from Chicago and had used Midwest-International as their moving company. They were very pleased with every facet of their move. Marge took note of the realtor’s recommendation and entered Midwest-International Shipping into her Smartphone so if we did find a property, we’d be ready to go.
As luck would have it, the second place we looked at was a perfect match for our ideal retirement home; it was a two-bedroom condo on the beach, overlooking the golf course. We had landed in paradise.
We called Midwest-International Shipping from the realtor’s office and explained that we would be moving from Chicago to the Bahamas, on June 22, the day after my retirement. They immediately assigned us our own personal moving consultant to help us with the details of our move from door to door, and booked our moving date on their calendar.
We told our moving consultant that we wanted to take our new hybrid car, 2 couches, a television, a small dining table, two large china cabinets, our bedroom set and about 50 boxes of kitchen, clothing, and personal items. The only ‘fragile’ items to be shipped were Marge’s 200 piece Lladro high-porcelain collection. Our personal moving consultant assured us that all our items would be carefully packed by professionals and placed in a shipping container.
Midwest International Shipping offered us basic supplies, custom packing, tagging, crating and padding to assure our items would arrive intact. They also assured us that they would take care of all the customs documents, packing lists, export declarations, bill of lading and any other documents we would need. They offered us free basic coverage for our move and discussed optional full-replacement coverage if we wanted to purchase it.
Four months later, June 22, 2010:
On the day of our move, Midwest-International Shipping had taken care of everything. All our items were safely loaded into a shipping container and Marge and I were off to the airport with our golf clubs and suitcases to take with us on the airplane. Our kids had taken us to the airport and although it was a fairly teary goodbye, they could see how happy we were about our decision to leave Chicago and move to the Bahamas. But, in retrospect, we realized that they also saw how relaxed we were because it had been the easiest move anyone could make. Midwest-International Shipping had done all the work for us, and all we had to do was to decide what we wanted to take with us.
As promised by our personal moving consultant, our shipment arrived at exactly the time it was expected to arrive. We had made arrangements with Midwest-International for help to unpack and place our furniture and our personal belongings in their locations, and as if by magic, within hours, they had completed the unpacking and removed all the empty boxes. It was official, we were home.
If you’re looking for a mover to help you move from Chicago, Illinois, or anywhere in the surrounding states, to a local or global destination, we highly recommend you call Midwest-International Shipping Company. They offer affordable prices for their services and guarantee that your precious possessions will arrive safely in your new location.
If you happen to come to the Bahamas, look for me and Marge; we’ll be the couple on the golf-course wearing Hawaiian shirts and Bermuda shorts with the great tans and smiles on our faces who are enjoying their retirement.
