Medical Tourism Grows in Sonora, Mexico
The Government of the State of Sonora, through the Tourism Development Commission, is promoting this destination at an international level to under an innovative method called “Health Tourism and Retirement Assistance” for which it has created the brand “Sonora Hospitality” that is organized with the health sector, health care providers and tourism.
Located in northwestern Mexico, Sonora is the border state that provides a high degree of security for residents and tourists as evidenced by statistics from the Ministry of Public Security, state and national. This is complemented by its tempered climate, friendly and courteous staff doctors and nurses, air and land connectivity and infrastructure.
MANY RETIREES HAVE SETTLED IN SONORA BY THE SEA OF CORTES
Sonora is the second largest state of the Republic, bordering U.S. states of Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico to the North with the beautiful Gulf of California also called the “Sea of Cortez” as its western border. The capital of Sonora is Hermosillo with a population nearly one million inhabitants. Some of our popular destinations for retirees are San Carlos, Kino Bay and Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) where the largest concentration exists. However, our “Pueblo Magico” Alamos that offers a quiet atmosphere and colonial style that is hard to resist.
The state offers a diversity of destinations, sea, desert, mountains and forest, ranging from the modern city of Hermosillo to magical colonial towns like Los Alamos and San Carlos. Sonora has always had a natural tourist vocation that has been strengthened in recent years with the necessary infrastructure planned in a professional manner. This has resulted in Sonora becoming one of the prominent states in the Federation to increase economic development through the areas of tourism and foreign investment promotion.
“USA AND CANADIAN INSURANCE ACCEPTED”
Sonora has one of only 9 hospitals in Mexico certified under the “JCI (Joint Commission International) standards receiving special recognition of accreditation under JCI rules and standards generally accepted by US and Canadian insurance companies.
Sonora has all the elements for establishing the health tourism industry as one of the largest generators of revenue in the sector, due to its close proximity to the U.S. When you add the lure of its beautiful beaches and the uniqueness of its diversified cities, the decision to spend time here and trust the medical system is an easy one. Sonora has an excellent quality of services in the different branches of medicine with the plus significantly lower costs. Collectively, this makes Sonora a good option for those looking for techniques in disease prevention, methods to improve your overall health and access to chronic or general surgery.
“ENGLISH SPOKEN HERE”
The State Government has identified as one of the main objectives needed to promote this new tourism industry the requirement to approve certain medical services and improve the English proficiency of the nurses and doctors in the industry as well as the certification of hospital and clinic facilities to ensure quality service. Since there is no real coordination between government and society to achieve these objectives and achieve a common goal, the State of Sonora government has taken on this task.
It has been determined that it was necessary to train a state sponsored multidisciplinary team to analyze the different practices of medical tourism worldwide and develop a comprehensive strategy that includes all stakeholders, State and Municipal governments, doctors, investors, private hospitals, nurses and the hotel industry to maintain standardization and avoid duplication of effort.
As a result of this evaluation, it was found that the Tourism Health and Retirement Assistance for Sonora program is a diversified array of important economic factors involving many stakeholders and will greatly benefit all sectors; economic, commercial and social.
According to the consulting firm “Deloitte Consulting”, who specializes in studies on the issues of health tourism, the prediction is that by the summer of 2011, one million Americans will seek medical services abroad and for 2015, it is estimated that the figure will rise to at least 1.6 million Americans. In Sonora we are working diligently to capture a high percentage of these foreigners seeking healthcare services by providing the needed services together with good service, high quality of procedural compliance and through the warmth of its people.

My family and I travel to Mexico at least once a year, sometimes twice, to visit the dentist. A friend in Phoenix had been going to a dentist in Mexico more than 20 years. Several local dentists in Florida said I needed a bunch of teeth capped and the bill came to thousands of dollars, I sent their evaluations to the dentist in Mexico and he said it would cost one-quarter of their price if I came to him–my wife thought I was crazy!
After I had the work done my wife accompanied me to the dentist a year later. She was amazed at the qualify of the service and work. Now we plan annual trips, see our friend in Phoenix and drive to Mexico just to see our dentist! He does great work, solves problems inexpensively that U.S. dentists want to do major work for, and going to him is a pleasure!
Hey Frank,
Enjoyed your article – this compliment is made first, in order to soften the negative one to come.

Great article, congratulations. Sonora being the 2nd largest state in Mexico is impressive and historical. I’ve personally visited the city Hermosillo on several occasions and was impressed the quality of medical services in the region.
